👗 About Lady J

Sewist • Alterations Specialist • Studio Owner

Hello & welcome 🤓 I’m Janelle “Lady J”, the Sewist behind House of Lady J, a Sewing & Alterations studio based in Augusta, GA.

I specialize in thoughtful garment alterations, pattern-based sewing projects, and select handmade pieces created with care and intention. My approach is calm, detail-focused, and designed to keep the process clear, respectful, and stress-free.

💖 How It All Began

I launched House of Lady J in 2016 as an outlet to share my growing passion for sewing and design. My journey began much earlier, inspired by my eldest daughter, who was born with Achondroplasia Dwarfism.

I wanted to create clothing that fit her beautifully and comfortably — something that was incredibly difficult to find for little people. You will find clothing for the big and tall - but nothing for the little and small. Being that my daughter is a little person (with dwarfism) that need led me to sewing, not as a hobby, but as a solution rooted in my daughter's care, her fit, and for her individuality.

Sew in 2012, I began sewing classes at Le Fashion Lab Fashion School in Atlanta, GA, and my Aunt Angela gifted me my very first sewing machine. From there, I fell in love with the process of turning fabric into something meaningful and wearable.

While my daughter may not let me sew for her anymore (teenagers, right? 😄), that foundation continues to guide my work today. I now create for women and men who value well-made high quality garments, proper fit, and one-of-a-kind handmade pieces that celebrate confidence and individuality.

🎓 Experience & Background

  • Certificate in Sewing & Pattern Making — Le Fashion Lab (Atlanta, GA)
  • Career Diploma in Dressmaking & Fashion Design — Penn Foster Career School
  • Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies — Penn Foster College
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) — University of Massachusetts Global

House of Lady J sewing since 2012, rooted in patience: attention to details, (not 'fast fashion'), and respect for the process. While I occasionally release handmade items for purchase, my primary focus is providing high-quality alterations giving you the proper garment fit.

Respect, One Love💙
