This is something alteration professionals hear from time to time. It is understandable to compare the cost of an alteration to the amount originally paid for the garment. However, the purchase price of the clothing does not determine how much work is required to alter it.

A garment may have been inexpensive to purchase, but changing its fit can still require skilled labor, careful construction work, professional equipment, and time.

The Price of the Garment and the Cost of the Labor Are Different

When clothing is manufactured, it is usually produced in large quantities using standardized sizing and assembly methods. One person may sew the sleeves, another may install the zipper, and another may complete the hem. This allows manufacturers to produce many garments quickly.

An alteration is different. The work is completed individually for one customer and one garment. The garment must be evaluated, fitted, marked, carefully opened where necessary, altered, reconstructed, pressed, and inspected.

You are not paying for the garment again. You are paying for the skilled labor required to change a finished garment without making it look carelessly altered. Essentially, you are now getting a “new” garment.

What looks like one seam from the outside may involve much more work inside the garment. Depending on the construction, an alteration may require:

A lower-priced garment can still be complicated to work on. In some cases, it may even be more difficult because of narrow seam allowances, delicate fabric, fused layers, decorative details, or construction methods that are challenging to open and rebuild.

For example, a $30 pair of pants may require more labor than a $200 pair of pants if the less expensive pair has a difficult waistband, limited seam allowance, multiple rows of topstitching, or details located directly in the alteration area.

Professional alteration pricing may account for:

• The garment’s construction
• The fabric and number of layers
• The complexity of the requested change
• The amount of disassembly and reconstruction required
• Fitting, measuring, pressing, and finishing time
• The experience and skill needed to complete the work properly

The goal is not simply to make the garment smaller, shorter, or larger. The goal is to complete the alteration while maintaining the garment’s balance, function, and finished appearance whenever possible.

Is the Alteration Worth It?

That decision belongs to the customer. A garment may be worth altering because it is a favorite piece, difficult to replace, needed for a special occasion, made from quality fabric, or already fits well in every area except one.

In other situations, the cost of the alteration may not make sense for the customer’s budget. A professional evaluation and quote provide the information needed to make that decision before the work begins.

The value of an alteration is not determined only by what the garment originally cost. It is determined by the work required and the value the finished garment has to the person wearing it.
