What Prom Season 2026 Taught Me as an Alterations Specialist ✂️🧵

Prom Season 2026 is finally slowing down here at  House of Lady J Alterations Studio in Downtown Augusta, GA… and whew. What a season it has been. 😊

I'm talking from broken invisible zippers and emergency hems to side take-ins, strap adjustments, and last-minute dress saves, this prom season kept the studio busy almost every single week.

Some dresses needed simple hemming. Others needed complete problem-solving. And honestly, that’s one thing I’ve learned more and more as an alterations specialist:

That is: No two garments are ever truly the same.

Alterations Are About More Than Sewing

A lot of people think alterations are just quick fixes, but many formal dresses come with layers, linings, delicate fabrics, stretch materials, mesh, boning, or construction details that require patience and careful handling.

Sometimes the challenge isn’t even the sewing itself. It’s figuring out the cleanest solution without compromising the overall look of the garment.

This season definitely pushed my creativity and problem-solving skills.

The Most Common Prom Alterations This Year

The biggest requests during Prom Season 2026 were:

• Dress hemming
• Strap shortening
• Side take-ins
• Bust adjustments
• Invisible zipper repairs
• Fit adjustments
• Modesty panels
• Letting hems down for extra length

One thing I noticed this year is that many customers ordered dresses online, which often meant the fit needed adjustments somewhere.

Small Business Reality During Busy Season

Running a sewing and alterations studio during prom season can be exciting, exhausting, rewarding, and unpredictable all at once. Some days were nonstop. Other days were quieter.

But seeing customers happy at pickup always makes the long hours worth it. 😊

Now Moving Into Summer Alterations Season ☀️

As prom season wraps up, the studio is now moving into summer alterations, everyday repairs, vacation clothing adjustments, weddings (bridal party only. Please note: I do not offer wedding gown alterations at this time), birthdays, graduations, and special event wear.

The sewing never really stops around here. ✂️🧵
